Simply put, human rights for us means being able to be ourselves
Today is #HumanRightsDay (Dec 10). To commemorate this day, ILGA ASIA asked its co-chairs, Shadi Amin and Candy D Yun, what Human Rights means to them. ILGA Asia also said, “We, ILGA Asia, will not stop raising our voices until LGBTI rights are recognised as universal human rights in the whole Asia region.”
“Human rights means to have the right to know that of the nearly 300 killed and 7,000 protesters arrested in IRAN in recent days, how many of them are from LGBTI community? No one knows. They too must have the right to protest against the violations of their rights in IRAN while expressing their true identities. Simply put, human rights for us means being able to be ourselves.”
— Shadi Amin (ILGA Asia Co-chair)
“LGBTI right is not some kind of ‘special rights’. When LGBTI rights recognised as universal human rights in Asia, the word ‘human rights’ will find its true definition in the region. Also, LGBTI rights is changing and expanding its own meaning in Asia. We, ILGA Asia, will not stop raising our voices until LGBTI rights recognised as universal human rights in the whole Asia region.”
— Candy YUN (ILGA Asia Co-chair)
