{"id":3511,"date":"2023-03-30T21:24:51","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T21:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/?p=3511"},"modified":"2023-03-31T08:21:29","modified_gmt":"2023-03-31T08:21:29","slug":"hate-speech-against-lgbt-people-used-to-create-fear-of-protests-report-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/3511\/","title":{"rendered":"Hate Speech Against LGBT People Used to Create Fear of Protests, Report Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hate speech and propaganda against the LGBTQ+ community were used during and after the nationwide anti-regime protests to spread fear of the protests, report finds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3512\" src=\"https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/30.03.23-Hatespeech-Cover-insta-EN-705x705.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report published by the Iranian Lesbian and Transgender Network (6Rang) in March 2023 investigated the prevalence and context of official hate speech against the LGBTQ+<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community.<\/span><b><i>Silencing protests: Official hate speech against LGBT people as a tool of suppression<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, September 2022-February 2023 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed that hate speech increased and was often used in the context of the protests between September 2022 to March 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community had always existed in Iran, the report shows that officials are using existing homophobia in society to dismantle the protests and their messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officials have attempted to convince the public that immorality will overtake Islam and all Iranians will be forced to partake in same sex conduct, as a way of spreading fear of the protests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report suggests that the rise in hate speech is a reactionary act against the increased visibility of LGBTQ+ people and LGBTQ+ issues in the protests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c6Rang is deeply concerned that the use of such language and propaganda further alienates an oppressed group, grows the unjust hatred and hostility towards them and affects the wellbeing of queer youth in Iran,\u201d the report states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newly published report is an extension of 6Rang\u2019s 2017 research report, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/6rang.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Official-Hate-Speech-against-LGBT-People-in-Iran.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a Great Honour to Violate Homosexuals\u2019 Rights\u201d: Official hate speech against LGBT people in Iran.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Official hate speech in Iran has a long history and is only becoming more prevalent. LGBTQ+ people are often said to be immoral, animalistic and a constant threat to Islamic family values. Hate speech is used by all levels of government, including the president and the Supreme Leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report ends with recommendations to the Iranian government and the international community, such as removing the death penalty for same sex acts and to hold all who spread hate against his community, accountable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iranian law subjects those found to have partaken in same sex acts to inhumane punishments, such as torture and death.
